The Basics

5 Simple Ways to Increase Your Personal Cyber Security

  • Use Unique Sentences as Passwords: Sentences aka Passphrases are stronger, longer and easier to remember than passwords. An example would be: *IwalkmydogRoloeverymorning!80 You can use password checker tools to check the strength of your passphrases.
  • Turn On Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA on email, social media, and banking. This adds a second step, normally in the form of a text message, to log in.
  • Update Your Devices and Apps Regularly: Install updates as soon as they’re available to patch security holes. A good example here are mobile phone updates and computer updates, like Windows updates. Sidenote: Restart your PC!
  • Be Cautious with Links and Emails: If you are not expecting an email and do not know the sender, send it away with the delete button.
  • Use a Free, Reputable Antivirus: Run regular scans with a trusted tool. Some examples: Microsoft Defender, Avast, Avira, Bitdefender. There are lots of free tools out there.

Public WiFi and App Tips

  • Use a VPN on Public Wi-Fi: When you’re on coffee shop or airport WiFi, turn on a trusted VPN (even a free one) so your data stays encrypted.
  • Use a VPN (or mobile data) on public Wi-Fi: For anything sensitive, use your phone’s hotspot or a trusted, full-device VPN to encrypt your traffic.
  • Check the network name & don’t auto-join: Confirm the hotspot’s name with staff; avoid auto-joining open networks, and “Forget” them after use. Prefer sites showing the padlock (HTTPS).
  • Avoid sensitive log-ins on open Wi-Fi: Don’t do banking, email or shopping on public networks. Use mobile data.
  • Visibility: Consider setting public profiles to "Friends Only" if you are concerned about online visibility
  • Review app permissions: Remove old third-party access, and keep apps updated.
